The Cup has returned to The Sharp Ground, Larkhill, after the victorious Gunners won the 150th Anniversary Match by 157 runs.

This was a match that truly lived up to the hype and billing. This was a match that had everything. This was a match at which our historic sparring partners, The Sappers, outshone themselves with their admin, facilities, catering, hospitality and après cricket fun. This will be a very hard act to follow and our thanks, gratitude and appreciation cannot be understated. A massive thank you, to all, for all the hard work that was involved.

In a season which the Gunners hadn't produced a single century, or a single 5-for, this was all to change in a single match. Graham Wiseman, batting at 3, scored 157 in the first innings, providing the major contribution to the Skipper's timely declaration at 8-327. Crucial to final victory, Charlie Harmer and Michael Cook, the latter in only his first Gunner-Sapper match, both took 5 wickets in the 2nd Sapper innings.

There was the usual mix of easy catches dropped and spectacular catches taken, by both sides. An array of beautifully placed drives and cuts, ugly edges and ridiculous smashes, combined with bowling which ranged from the tediously accurate to the wildly optimistic.

There were moments of very good fortune and very bad. Umpire decisions which were competently made and, just occasionally, left the spectators wondering what the umpires had seen that they hadn't. This was a game that had everything and one in which the Spirit of the Game prevailed.

Some personal performances must be highlighted. These are:

Royal Engineers CC

Jacques Prinsloo took 10 wickets in the match, 4 in the 1st RACC innings, 6 in the 2nd.
Ian Redfern, Chris Needham and Steve Ryder all made half centuries.

Royal Artillery CC

Charlie Harmer took 7 wickets, 2 in the 1st RECC innings, 5 in the second.
Michael Cook took 7 wickets, 2 in the 1st RECC innings, 5 in the second.
Graham Wiseman made 157 runs in the 1st innings, equal to the margin by which the Gunners won the match.

In après cricket, Sapper entertainment was unparalleled. Zorbing (don't ask) took place after the first day's play with a total disregard for regulations and playing conditions; outstanding! Night 2 provided the most spectacular light show imaginable. Lightning of every description and intensity was on display; truly awesome! (Note to RECC Hon Sec - it would have been even better without the rain).

The final of the Power Plate competition will be played at ACA Aldershot on Monday, 21 July. Play commences at !!:00. A rather odd coincidence caused both teams to reach the final without playing a semi final; the respective opposing teams having conceded the game.
